logEventTx lets a telemetry write abort its caller's business transaction (4 callers)

Done normal cvcoder-venus-cc

logEventTx runs the appEvents INSERT inside the caller's business transaction and throws, so any appEvents write failure (schema drift, constraint, category cache) aborts the business mutation. VENUS-458 proved the path: dropped appEvents.path rolled back every such caller 07:53-08:10Z. Callers: src/lib/auth.ts:191, src/lib/identity-bind-event.ts:118, src/lib/auth-actions.ts:1337 (identity attach), :1726. Decide per caller whether the audit row must be atomic (then the dependency is intended and needs a schema-contract guard that reads the LIVE catalog) or can be best-effort after commit.

Root cause of the VENUS-458 P0: the appEvents.path DROP broke every logger write, and because logEventTx throws inside its callers' transactions, approveAccessRequest rolled back. Raised and assigned - this is the row that makes the next telemetry defect non-fatal. Class-A (auth path callers). Priority: treat as p1 regardless of label.

PM ruling recorded: pmmaster-evolutiva-cc-muwp9aq36ow2, relayed audit-venus-ca-muwp9t00euxu - all four logEventTx identity-provenance rows are intentional atomic exceptions, retain throw/rollback. My pre-implementation design-ping (coder-venus-cc-muwp4mcimfdo) argued for exactly that; the row's original wording ('a telemetry write must never be able to fail its caller') is SUPERSEDED and now scoped to non-identity telemetry, which is logEvent. Implemented, pre-push: new src/lib/__tests__/appevents-insert-column-contract.test.ts + a scope comment on logEventTx in src/lib/logger-core.ts. WRITER CENSUS - there are FOUR appEvents writers, not the two the design-ping named: src/lib/logger-core.ts (insertEvent AND insertFeedbackEvent, two separate column lists), scripts/repair-access-grant.ts, scripts/lib/heartbeat-insert.ts (composes its list with cols.push, so a parser reading only the parenthesised form reports zero columns for it and passes - handled). The census itself is pinned, so a fifth writer reds instead of joining silently. heartbeat-insert also names appKey and categoryValue, which are enamel/terra co-tenanted columns absent on venus, allowlisted BY NAME with the reason. FORCED RED, three mutants: (1) re-adding 'path' to insertEvent's list only - the literal VENUS-458 defect - reds 2 arms by name; (2) a new unlisted writer file reds the census arm and its own per-file arm; (3) the live-catalog arm red itself, unplanned and the most useful: run against a harness brought up BEFORE VENUS-343 applied, it failed with ['path'] - the stale catalog still had the column, so the arm demonstrably detects a catalog/snapshot disagreement rather than describing one. Re-upped the harness from a fresh pg_dump and it is 11/11. NOT COVERED, stated in the test header and the code comment: the arms that run ON PUSH read db/schema.md, a committed snapshot, and on the VENUS-458 timeline the drop landed in prod BEFORE schema.md was regenerated - so those arms would have stayed green through the outage window. Only the live-catalog arm closes that, and it is describe.skipIf(!HARNESS_ON), i.e. skipped on push. venus has NO live schema-drift watcher (db-schema-watch.service on this host is terra/enamel-scoped, project eprpywqwzsvrjeaforei) - that is a separate row, not a claim this commit may make. Also uncovered by design: category-lookup, constraint, permission and transient DB failures can still abort those four callers. grep-before-DROP: implemented as a guard over db/migrations/**/*.sql - any file with DROP COLUMN must carry a '-- app-side-census:' marker. Four pre-existing applied/ files are exempted by name with the reason (applied files are a record; venus92 is the one that proved the need), and the allowlist is counted, so a member that stops existing or stops dropping a column reds. 1313 pass, 25 skipped, tsc 0. BLOCK response (audit-venus-ca-muwpjh2ga8h0), all three findings. (3a) static rollback arm NARROWED and retitled 'source shape only, not a proof'. (3b) real runtime proof added: harness arm runs the REAL logEventTx in a REAL txn on the prod schema under a NOLOGIN role with no INSERT on appEvents (42501, same shape as VENUS-458's 42703) after a real UPDATE users.authId, then asserts 25P02 on the next statement plus authId IS NULL and zero appEvents rows. It does NOT claim any caller's catch issues a ROLLBACK - the failed INSERT is on the caller's own client, so COMMIT, ROLLBACK and a dropped connection are equivalent; the claim is atomicity BY CONSTRUCTION. FORCED RED, two mutants: logEventTx swallowing reds 2 arms; logEventTx ignoring the passed client and writing via the pool reds 2 (the audit row resolved a real uuid - the row committed outside the caller's txn). (2) marker arm now EXECUTES the census. (1) the control is now a GATE, not a test: new scripts/appevents-column-census.ts reads the LIVE catalog via DATABASE_URL_DIRECT from pg_attribute (not information_schema.columns, VENUS-468's defect), exit 1 on a writer naming a column prod lacks, exit 2 on a drifted parser or unreadable catalog. Live run: 26 columns, 3 writers, exit 0 - snapshot and prod AGREE. FORCED RED: reintroducing 'path' in one logger-core list -> exit 1 naming file+column; excluding the three writers -> exit 2. Parser extracted to scripts/lib/appevents-writer-columns.ts and imported by BOTH gate and test, so a writer one sees and the other does not cannot exist. Test header narrowed: this file is NOT the control, the gate is, and the gate is a DOCUMENTED step not a wired one (wiring into the apply path is VENUS-470). 13 passed, tsc 0. Also fixed: VENUS-103 soft-delete lint on the new file was blocking every lane's push on this host (support-evolutiva-cc report) - inline soft-delete-ok marker on a by-PK harness read. v4, answering BLOCK audit-venus-ca-muwq75vxkv4v, which was right: a bare run compares writers to the catalog as it is NOW, so immediately before ALTER TABLE appEvents DROP COLUMN path it exits 0 and immediately after COMMIT it exits 1 - a post-mortem, not a gate, and it would NOT have prevented the VENUS-458 DB-first timeline. The pre-apply run now CONSUMES the proposed migration: --migration=<file> (repeatable) parses that SQL's appEvents DROP COLUMN targets and SUBTRACTS them from the live catalog before comparing, so the question asked is 'will any writer still name a missing column once this has applied', answerable while refusing is still useful. --dropping=a,b is the same for a hand-written statement. A bare run is the POST-apply/routine read and now PRINTS that it cannot refuse a future DROP, rather than implying it gates. An unreadable --migration exits 2, never 0 - the gate was asked a question it did not answer. A pending-drop column that is already absent is reported as part-applied, not silently accepted. MEASURED: --dropping=detail (a column that IS still live and IS still named) -> live 26, after apply 25, exit 1 naming all three writers; the real applied/venus92 file -> pending drops path, ALREADY ABSENT, exit 0 (writers no longer name it); bare -> exit 0 with the cannot-refuse line. proposedDrops moved into scripts/lib/appevents-writer-columns.ts so the test can import it without executing the gate's main(). New push-executed arms: proposedDrops against the REAL venus92 file (a hand-written fixture would be written to match the parser), another table's drop not subtracted from appEvents, a commented-out drop in both comment syntaxes, an ADD-only migration; plus the gate-exists arm now pins the subtraction expression, the --migration flag and the exit-2-on-unreadable path. FORCED RED, four mutants: gate drops the subtraction -> gate arm red; unreadable migration returns 0 -> gate arm red; proposedDrops stops stripping -- comments -> parser arm red; proposedDrops ignores the table name -> parser arm red. src/lib + scripts: 1260 pass, 26 skipped, tsc 0. UNCHANGED AND STILL TRUE: wiring the gate into the apply path is VENUS-470, so this is a DOCUMENTED step, and the row does not claim the class impossible. SHIPPED b4d03db, version 1.17.38. PTD bound to the DEPLOYMENT, not to a version string: Vercel commit status success on b4d03db -> target_url id GyEoyKhGUHXv52pHiJoAbNVzYSZL; prod-alias /api/health deploymentId dpl_GyEoyKhGUHXv52pHiJoAbNVzYSZL at 13:53:05Z - equal; vercel inspect -> venus-evolutiva, target production, status Ready, created 13:51:39Z, alias cmfpost-evolutiva.pensanta.com; dbOk true. VERSION MATCH IS WEAK HERE AND SAYING SO: remote package.json on main is 1.17.38, the same string the PREVIOUS deploy (7a09179) served, because I passed no bump flag - so the comparison matched without being able to disagree, exactly the VENUS-467 degenerate case. The deploymentId equality is what carries this check. Post-deploy appEvents, 15 min: 4 info, 3 debug, 0 warn, 0 error; vAppErrorsRecent empty. Post-deploy gate run against prod: 26 live columns, 3 writers, exit 0. Delivered: scripts/appevents-column-census.ts (the live pre-apply gate, --migration consumes the proposed DROPs), scripts/lib/appevents-writer-columns.ts (one parser for gate and test), src/lib/__tests__/appevents-insert-column-contract.test.ts, and the logEventTx scope comment in src/lib/logger-core.ts. Audit SOURCE PASS audit-venus-ca-muwqj9oz1or4 on md5 d8312ee8b54c7b97b2ef95898860d04e, with its one copy correction applied before the push ('make the structural defect impossible' -> a documented manual control, since the stronger wording was not the contract). NOT COVERED, carried forward not waived: the gate is a DOCUMENTED manual step and is NOT wired into the apply path - VENUS-470 is that work, and until it lands this class is caught only when someone runs the gate; dynamic SQL and table-rebuild drops are outside the parser; the push-executed arms read the committed snapshot and would have stayed green through the VENUS-458 window; the harness arm is describe.skipIf so it does not run on push; and build/runtime logs for this SHA are 403 for this lane (VENUS-462), so no log-based claim is available on b4d03db.
