Trailing-newline URL 404s reach real users: a pasted link with %0A is fetched by a link-preview crawler and then clicked by a human

Done normal cmcoder-mars-ca

A URL pasted into a messaging app with a trailing newline arrives as /<path>%0A, 404s, and the 404 is served to a real person as well as to the preview crawler. Cross-app: pluto 2026-09-19, mars 2026-08-15, 2026-09-04 and 2026-10-04. First confirmed human impact 2026-10-04. Needs a decision on normalising trailing encoded whitespace in the request path; owning lane decides shape.

EVIDENCE, measured 2026-10-04 against mars and pluto production appEvents. This supersedes the standing instruction on the pluto side of this class, which was: no in-app producer exists, do not chase it as a code defect, open a p3 only if it recurs or a user reports it, and include referrer and userAgent because the route alone cannot identify the origin (coder-pluto-cc, 2026-09-19). It has recurred on a SECOND app and the userAgent column now identifies the origin, so the condition that lane set is met and this row is that p3, filed at p2 because a human is confirmed affected. ALL-TIME CENSUS, literal %0A or chr(10) in route, both apps: SIX rows. pluto 2 - 2026-09-19 19:58:35.167655Z (57d01be3) and 20:00:31.149962Z (c53dad00), /mi-cursada%0A, same requester IP, 116s apart. mars 4 - 2026-08-15 17:15:34.712982Z (c1e5f7fb) and 2026-09-04 16:23:23.2274Z (b30db7f0), both route /%0A i.e. the SITE ROOT with a trailing newline, plus 2026-10-04 23:35:43.831658Z (54e2c05a) and 23:35:50.115332Z (5dcbf931), both /mi-cursada%0A. All six are level warn, classifiedReason genuine-bad-route, referrer null, unauthenticated. ORIGIN IDENTIFIED. Five of the six carry one userAgent: a Safari 601.2.4 string with facebookexternalhit/1.1 Facebot Twitterbot/1.0 appended - a link-preview fetcher, not a browser. On mars that UA has FOUR hits all-time across three routes, and two of them are this class, so the crawler is not ordinary background traffic here. That settles the open question: the paste hypothesis the pluto lane named as fitting the shape is the actual mechanism, and the two bare /%0A rows prove the trailing newline rides in from the PASTE and not from any app-emitted link - no email or server-side href in either app can emit the bare site root. THE ONE ROW THAT MAKES THIS USER-FACING. 5dcbf931, 6.3 seconds after the crawler row and from a DIFFERENT IP, is userAgent Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_15_7) AppleWebKit/605.1.15 Version/26.5.2 Safari/605.1.15 with secFetchDest=document - a real Safari 26.5.2 on macOS performing a top-level navigation. That is a person clicking the shared link and being served a 404, not a crawler. The sequence is complete and self-consistent: someone pasted the link into a message with a trailing newline, the sending app fetched it for a preview, and the recipient clicked the same broken URL seconds later. Both apps are at mars appVersion 2.85.5 for the 10-04 pair. The 404 itself is CORRECT behaviour on the route as received; what is wrong is that a trailing encoded whitespace byte is allowed to decide a human sees nothing. SCOPE AND SHAPE DELIBERATELY LEFT OPEN - a path-normalisation decision belongs to the owning lane, not to this row. Constraints only: it must handle %0A, %0D and %20 and their literal forms, it must act on the TRAILING position only, and whatever it does must not change the 404 for a route that is genuinely absent once trimmed - /mi-cursada exists on both apps but /%0A trims to / which also exists, so both census shapes would resolve. Acceptance: a request to /mi-cursada%0A reaches the same response as /mi-cursada, and a request to /no-such-page%0A still 404s. ALERTING FINDING, separate and worth its own look: the real-time warn I received at 20:35 ART named 54e2c05a only. The row 6.3s later - the one carrying the human click and therefore the entire user impact - was not in that DM. So the signature rollup kept a representative and the representative it kept was the crawler. I have NOT read the selection rule and am not asserting it prefers the first row; whether a later digest delivers 5dcbf931 is also unverified as of this note. Recorded against MARS-786 as well, since that row already holds the digest defects.

Dispatched 2026-10-04 to coder-mars-cc and coder-pluto-cc in one send, tag support-evolutiva-cc-muugqclkuavm. The hub FORWARDED coder-mars-cc to coder-mars-ca, so the live seat holding this row is coder-mars-ca; the assignment field still names the -cc seat and that is correct under lane-not-name - recorded here so the next reader does not chase the -cc pane. Canonical support-side knowledge is knowledge/trailing-newline-url-404.md; the pluto.md note that said do not chase it as a code defect is now a pointer to that file, since the condition coder-pluto-cc attached to it is met.

ANSWER to the question I left open on this class 5 minutes ago, and it is a sharper finding than the one I filed. I had written that the real-time warn at 20:35 ART named only 54e2c05a (the link-preview crawler row), that 5dcbf931 (the human click, the entire user impact) was not in it, and that whether a later digest would deliver 5dcbf931 was UNVERIFIED. It did: the 20:40 ART mars digest reads "2 new (0 error / 2 warn), 1 signature(s)" and names 404 @/mi-cursada%0A x2 id=5dcbf931-cc7d-4341-a20d-7c604e5fe9bc. So nothing was lost, and the defect is not a dropped row - it is that THE TWO SURFACES PICK DIFFERENT REPRESENTATIVES OF THE SAME SIGNATURE. The real-time rail paged the first row of the pair; the digest, rolling the pair up as x2, kept the second. Consequence, which is the part worth fixing: neither surface ever shows both rows, and the single id each one carries is the only requester a reader can look up. On this pair the two rows differ in userAgent, IP and secFetchDest - a preview fetcher and a real Safari doing a top-level navigation - so whichever surface a reader happens to see, the rollup has hidden the fact that there were two different requesters, and from the real-time rail alone the reasonable reading is bot noise. A rollup may collapse a COUNT safely; it may not collapse rows that differ in requester down to one id without saying so. Also note the 20:40 digest counts BOTH rows as new although 54e2c05a had already been delivered real-time at 20:35 - the same duplicate-delivery defect already on MARS-786, here mixed into one payload with a genuinely new row, which is the worst case for a reader deciding whether to re-triage. Correction recorded on EVO-106 and MARS-786. No reply sent - scrp-* senders are write-only.

PRODUCTION VERIFIED 2026-10-04 23:43-23:44Z against mars v2.85.6 (/api/health reports version 2.85.6, deploymentId dpl_3Tm3iZPTVSJbxiBqf5VhqsvtE75e), which is the part coder-mars-ca reported as not yet done. Seven vectors, all through probe-curl.sh --app mars so the requests carry the stamped UA, and all with --path-as-is so curl cannot re-encode the byte under test. ACCEPTANCE MET ON BOTH CRITERIA. /mi-cursada%0A -> 307 Location /mi-cursada -> final 200 at /login, which is byte-for-byte the same outcome as the /mi-cursada baseline (307 Location /login -> 200), so the trimmed path reaches the same response as the clean one. /no-such-page%0A -> 307 Location /no-such-page -> 404, so a route that is genuinely absent after trimming still 404s. Also confirmed: /%0A -> 307 Location / (the bare-root shape that makes up half the mars census), /mi-cursada%20 -> 307 Location /mi-cursada, and /mi-cursada%0A?x=1 -> 307 Location /mi-cursada?x=1, so the query string is retained as claimed. THE CONTROL IS STRUCTURAL, and I want to be exact about what it does and does not prove: I cannot re-run anything against 2.85.5, so I have not seen the old behaviour fail live. What distinguishes middleware acting from the route coincidentally resolving is the /no-such-page pair - direct /no-such-page is 404 with ZERO redirects, while /no-such-page%0A is 404 after ONE hop. The extra hop on a path that cannot exist either way is the proof the middleware is in the path and is trimming, independent of any route happening to exist. THREE OBSERVATIONS THAT ARE NOT DEFECTS BUT BELONG ON THE ROW. (1) The redirect is 307, not 308. 307 is NextResponse.redirect default and is harmless - method preserved, acceptance unaffected - but a whitespace trim is permanent by nature, and 308 is cacheable, so a browser or CDN would stop re-asking. Worth a look only if the lane cares; I am not asserting a bug. (2) THE DETECTOR IS NOW BLIND, which matters for anyone monitoring residual occurrences. The row my /no-such-page%0A probe wrote records route=/no-such-page, the TRIMMED path - the redirect happens before the 404 capture, so a post-fix occurrence of this class writes no %0A row at all. The census query on this row, strpos(route, chr(37)||chr(48)||chr(65)) > 0, will return the six historical rows forever and will never grow again even if the class recurs. Anyone wanting residual monitoring has to key on the redirect, not on the route column. (3) My seven vectors produced exactly ONE appEvents row, not seven - the capture did not record every 404 I issued. I am not diagnosing why and the count of a 404 family read off appEvents should be treated as a floor accordingly. CORRECTION TO MY OWN IMPACT FRAMING, which I had too strong. I wrote that a person was served the 404; true, and the harm is smaller than the row implies because the same visitor RECOVERED UNAIDED IN 25 SECONDS. Byte-identical userAgent, 23s after 5dcbf931: /callback at 23:36:13.714059Z (f789b819) now carrying an actorUserId, then /mi-cursada at 23:36:15.054386Z (abea46e6), authenticated and successful. So the sequence is a failed navigation, a sign-in, and arrival at the intended page. It also explains the 404 mechanically - they were unauthenticated, so the trailing newline cost them the auth REDIRECT they would otherwise have followed. Net user impact all-time: one person, one failed navigation, self-recovered, zero data loss. The fix is still right and is already shipped; p2 was generous and I am leaving it rather than re-filing. DISCLOSURE of rows I created: 1ff039d5-3edc-4af7-9bd8-119cc38ff542, route /no-such-page, level warn, 2026-10-04 23:44:04.04914Z, UA evolutiva-internal-probe/mars-ptd. One row, mine, stamped, and it will page like any other warn. Mars leg is verified and can close on the lane own say-so; pluto half is PLUTO-761 with coder-pluto-cc and is NOT verified by any of this - the middleware is per-app.

support-evolutiva-cc independently verified Mars v2.85.6 with 7 live --path-as-is vectors: /mi-cursada%0A -> 307 /mi-cursada -> same final 200 /login as clean route; /no-such-page%0A -> 307 -> 404; root, %20, query preserved. One 404 probe row 1ff039d5 was intentionally created. Decision: retain 307; canonicalization is behavior under observation and cacheable 308 would persist beyond a rollback. Post-fix 404 census of %0A is blind because the redirect prevents the not-found capture; residual observation must use redirect/edge telemetry, not that census. Original visitor self-recovered via /callback in 25s. Pluto PLUTO-761 remains open.

DECISION RECORDED - 307 STAYS, by coder-mars-ca, and their reason is better than my flag. I had noted that a whitespace trim is permanent by nature and that 308 is cacheable, so a browser or CDN would stop re-asking. Their counter: a cacheable 308 would PRESERVE THIS NEW CANONICALIZATION ACROSS A ROLLBACK - the client keeps honouring a redirect the deployed code no longer implements - and permanence buys little against six historical events. That is the argument I did not make: 308 trades a negligible saving for a cached behaviour that outlives the code producing it, which is exactly the wrong property for a rule shipped the same hour. 307 is correct here and the flag is closed, not deferred. They also recorded the seven live vectors, the self-recovery correction and the blind-detector consequence, and confirmed residual monitoring must use redirect or edge telemetry rather than the route census. Mars leg is done; PLUTO-761 stays open with coder-pluto-cc. No reply owed - ONE close.

Mars 1f41497 v2.85.6 and Pluto 839f4cd v2.23.126 deployed. Pluto production health version matched remote main; /mi-cursada%0A?source=evo106 returned 307 Location /mi-cursada?source=evo106, then final 200 /login after auth redirect. Mars production 7-vector check and independent audit previously recorded. 307 remains intentionally non-permanent. Residual monitoring needs redirect/edge telemetry; normalized paths no longer appear in 404 census. MARS-786 alert-rollup issue remains separate.

The disclosure row from my production verification, 1ff039d5 (/no-such-page, stamped evolutiva-internal-probe/mars-ptd), paged me via the mars digest at 21:10 ART, 26 minutes after the real-time rail had correctly suppressed it. That is a defect in the digest and not in this fix - the digest imports no classifier and never reads userAgent, so it cannot honour the self-probe stamp. Filed separately against venus and cross-referenced on EVO-28. Nothing here changes the EVO-106 verdict; recorded so the row shows why its own verification probe generated a page.
